Next, continue to the picturesque island of Ilha de Marajó, home to the unique stilt village of Afuá. This vibrant town is completely car- and motorcycle-free—transportation is exclusively by bicycle, including the local "bi-taxis" (four-wheeled quadricycles).

From Marajó, the journey leads to Belém, then on to São Luís, and finally ends in Fortaleza.

The ideal time for the combination of an Amazon tour and the extension through Lençóis Maranhenses (from São Luís to Fortaleza) is during the months of June, July, and August.

During this window, the optimal conditions of both regions align perfectly:

• In the Amazon (June to August): Rivers reach their annual high-water mark. This makes it ideal to explore the rainforest by boat and canoe—flooded forest areas (Igapós) become navigable, offering excellent conditions for wildlife spotting right at canopy level. At the same time, rainfall decreases noticeably.

• In Lençóis Maranhenses (June to August): Following the rainy season, the dune lagoons are completely full and glow in vivid shades of blue and green. With minimal rain and plenty of sunshine, this period offers perfect conditions for swimming, trekking, and off-road tours.

• June & July (The Absolute Peak): The best overall months for the combined itinerary. The Amazon enjoys high water levels for seamless boat excursions, while the lagoons of Lençóis Maranhenses reach their maximum capacity.
• August (Highly Recommended): The Amazon continues to offer great conditions with high water levels. In Lençóis Maranhenses, smaller lagoons slowly begin to dry up, but the main lagoons remain full and the days are consistently sunny.
• September (Conditional / Alternative): Still suitable for Lençóis Maranhenses (major lagoons still hold water), but river levels in the Amazon drop significantly. While this reveals exposed river beaches, deeper boat excursions into smaller tributaries become limited.

Summary: To fully experience the best of both destinations, scheduling the tour between June and August is highly recommended.
