• The Deep Green: From Manaus, a scenic flight reveals the vast Rio Negro. We disappear into the Anavilhanas Archipelago, navigating a labyrinth of 400 islands, tracking pink dolphins, and staying in luxury eco-lodges deep within the jungle’s pulse.
• The River’s Flow: We drift downstream, pausing at the white-sand beaches of Alter do Chão. Navigating the narrow furos—where the forest touches the boat—we explore the stilt-town of Afuá before reaching the vibrant markets of Belém.
• Dunes & Salt: The scenery shifts to the surreal white sands of Lençóis Maranhenses. We dive into turquoise lagoons and witness the scarlet ibis flight in the Parnaíba Delta. The finale: a 300 km 4x4 dash directly along the beaches to Jericoacoara and Fortaleza.
• Three Weeks: From the heart of the jungle to the edge of the ocean.

Detailed Itinerary & Mileage Overview

Part 1: Manaus & the Anavilhanas Archipelago (Days 1–5)

• Day 1 (Arrival in Manaus): Arrival in Manaus. In the afternoon, visit the opulent Amazon Theatre and the historic Adolpho Lisboa Market. We conclude our arrival day relaxing over a shared dinner in the city. (approx. 15 km in the city)
• Day 2 (Manaus → Anavilhanas National Park): Travel by seaplane (Cessna Caravan) from Manaus directly north to the archipelago. Flight distance: approx. 100 km (as the crow flies). After landing, check in to the exclusive eco-lodge within the National Park.
• Day 3–5 (Anavilhanas Expeditions): Jungle explorations by boat through the labyrinth of 400 islands. Hikes in the flooded igapós, observation of river dolphins (botos), and night safaris. (approx. 40–60 km boat ride per day)

Part 2: The Great Passage to Santarém (Days 6–8)

• Day 6 (Return to Manaus & Embarkation): Return flight by seaplane to Manaus (approx. 100 km) and subsequent boarding of the expedition vessel for the grand journey downstream.
• Day 7–8 (Journey to Santarém & Alter do Chão): Cruising downstream while observing riverside life. Arrival in Santarém and onward travel to Alter do Chão (the "Caribbean of the Amazon"). Relaxing on the white sandy beaches of the Tapajós River. (River distance by ship: approx. 800 km)

Part 3: Marajó – Where the River Meets the Sea (Days 9–12)

• Day 9–10 (Through the Furos to Afuá): Continued travel by ship through the extremely narrow furos (rainforest channels) to Afuá, the car-free stilt village. (Ship distance: approx. 350 km)
• Day 11–12 (Marajó Island / Soure): Exploration of the eastern side of Marajó, famous for massive water buffalo farms and wide coastal beaches. (approx. 80 km island transfer by car/ferry)

Part 4: Belém – Gateway to the Ocean (Days 13–14)

• Day 13 (Marajó → Belém): Boat journey across the Bay of Marajó to Belém (approx. 90 km by ship). Visit the famous Ver-o-Peso Market and enjoy a sundowner at the Docas.
• Day 14 (Belém – Extra Overnight Stay): A full day in Belém without an onward flight. Exploration of colonial architecture, local Carimbó dancing, and culinary highlights.

Extension: The Route of Emotions (Days 15–21)

Part 5: São Luís & the Heart of Lençóis (Days 15–16)

• Day 15 (Belém → São Luís): Domestic flight from Belém to São Luís (approx. 550 km as the crow flies). Upon arrival, guided tour of the historic old town of São Luís (UNESCO World Heritage site) and overnight stay. (approx. 10 km in the city)
• Day 16 (São Luís → Santo Amaro): Travel in a private 4x4 vehicle from São Luís to Santo Amaro, right on the edge of the Lençóis Maranhenses to the deepest lagoons. (Driving distance: approx. 240 km)

Part 6: The Delta & Piauí (Day 17)

• Day 17 (Santo Amaro → Barreirinhas → Atins → Parnaíba): 4x4 dune crossing to Atins (approx. 90 km of unpaved track). Continue along the coastal tracks of Paulino Neves, cross the border into Piauí, and take an afternoon speedboat tour in the Parnaíba Delta (Highlight: Revoada dos Guarás). (Total driving distance for the day: approx. 180 km)

Part 7: Ceará & Jericoacoara (Days 18–19)

• Day 18 (Parnaíba → Jericoacoara): Spectacular coastal drive via Camocim (ferry), passing the "Island of Love" and the Tatajuba dunes directly along the beach to Jericoacoara. (Driving distance: approx. 180 km)
• Day 19 (Jericoacoara): Free day to enjoy the Lagoa do Paraíso and watch the sunset from the legendary Sunset Dune.

Part 8: The Connection to Europe (Days 20–21)

• Day 20 (Jericoacoara → Fortaleza – The Coastal Route): Spectacular 300 km 4x4 coastal transfer directly along the beach (passing through Icaraizinho and Flecheiras) instead of taking the long asphalt road to Fortaleza. (Driving distance: approx. 300 km of beach/coastal tracks)
• Day 21 (Fortaleza → Europe): Return flight from Fortaleza International Airport (FOR) to Europe.

Best Time to Visit: Amazon & Lençóis Maranhenses

The optimal overlap for both regions is during the months of June, July, and August. During this period, both zones enjoy perfect natural conditions:

• In the Amazon: Rivers are at their peak water levels. Flooded forests (igapós) are navigable by canoe, allowing for excellent wildlife viewing right at canopy level while rainfall decreases noticeably.
• In Lençóis Maranhenses: Following the rainy season, dune lagoons are fully filled and glow in intense shades of blue and green, accompanied by plenty of sunshine and minimal rain.

Tailored Experiences & Flexibility

This route is just one of many tailor-made variants that I can put together for you personally. A journey of this scale requires at least 2 weeks, preferably 3 weeks, to experience the various regions intensively.

For a more flexible itinerary, you can easily omit Marajó Island (Afuá and Soure) and travel directly from Alter do Chão and Santarém to Belém—a passage through the spectacular, narrow channels of the Strait of Breves, which is also extremely scenic and impressive.
