The current of this river is the pulse of my life

21 Days Across the Amazon

Amazon Experience – Culture, Nature & Cruise to the Ocean

 Overview

The Deep Green

From Manaus, a scenic flight reveals the vast Rio Negro. We disappear into the Anavilhanas Archipelago, navigating a labyrinth of 400 islands, tracking pink dolphins, and staying in luxury eco-lodges deep within the jungle’s pulse. The River’s Flow. We drift downstream, pausing at the white-sand beaches of Alter do Chão. Navigating the narrow Furos—where the forest touches the boat—we explore the stilt-town of Afuá before reaching the vibrant markets of Belém.

Dunes & Salt. The scenery shifts to the surreal white sands of Lençóis Maranhenses. We dive into turquoise lagoons and witness the scarlet ibis flight in the Parnaíba Delta. The finale: a 300 km 4x4 dash directly along the beaches to Jericoacoara and Fortaleza.

Three weeks. From the heart of the jungle to the edge of the ocean.

Part 1: Manaus & the Anavilhanas Archipelago (4–5 Days)

The Journey Begins: Our adventure starts in Manaus. After immersing ourselves in the local culture—visiting the opulent Amazon Theatre and the historic Adolpho Lisboa Market—we leave civilization behind and head north toward the pristine wilderness of Anavilhanas National Park.

Entering the Archipelago: We take to the skies in a Cessna Caravan for a breathtaking 40-minute scenic flight over the Amazon rainforest. Following the course of the Rio Negro, the view from above is mesmerizing: the water appears pitch-black and smooth as glass, framed by an endless expanse of impenetrable greenery.

Eco-Lodge Experience: We check into an exclusive Eco-Lodge located directly within the National Park. Here, you will fall asleep surrounded by the authentic symphony of the jungle, while enjoying every modern comfort and refined amenity.

On-Site Adventures: From our base at the lodge, we embark on expeditions in small boats through a labyrinth of 400 islands. We hike through the Igapós (flooded forests), spot the legendary pink river dolphins (Botos), and encounter mysterious nocturnal wildlife on guided night safaris. This is the ultimate place to absorb the profound silence and the immense, raw energy of the rainforest.

Part 2: The Great Passage to Santarém (3 Days)

We return briefly to Manaus to board our expedition vessel for the grand journey downstream.

  • River Life: Spend your days on deck watching the riverbanks constantly shift. We pass small riverside settlements and local fishermen in their traditional canoes.
  • Alter do Chão: Upon arriving in Santarém, we head straight to Alter do Chão, the "Caribbean of the Amazon." It is the perfect spot to jump into the crystal-clear waters of the Tapajós River and relax on white sandy beaches after our days in the deep jungle.

Part 3: Marajó – Where the River Meets the Sea (4 Days)

We continue east toward the massive Marajó Island.

  • The Furos & Afuá: The ship winds through the "Furos"—extremely narrow channels where the rainforest is within arm's reach. We visit Afuá, a vibrant, car-free village built entirely on stilts.
  • Soure: We explore the island's eastern side, famous for its massive water buffalo farms and wide beaches where you can already feel the tides of the nearby ocean.

Part 4: Belém – Gateway to the Ocean (2 Days)

The expedition concludes in Belém, a city bursting with energy and flavors.

  • Culinary & Culture: We visit the Ver-o-Peso Market to discover exotic fruits and herbs, ending the journey with a sundowner at the Docas. The colonial architecture and the rhythm of the Carimbó dance provide the perfect finale to this adventure.

Extension: The Route of Emotions (São Luís → Jericoacoara → Fortaleza)

A 1-hour flight from Belém to São Luís.

Part 1: The Heart of the Lençóis (São Luís to Santo Amaro and Atins)

  • Day 1: São Luís → Santo Amaro. Departure from São Luís in a private 4x4 vehicle. Santo Amaro is home to the deepest and most isolated lagoons in the Lençóis Maranhenses. As it sits directly on the edge of the National Park, access is strictly limited, guaranteeing a much more private experience than in other towns.
  • Day 2: Santo Amaro → Barreirinhas → Atins. We cross the dunes toward Atins, a charming and rustic fishing village (style: "barefoot luxury"). Atins is where the Preguiças River meets the Atlantic Ocean.

Part 2: The Delta and Piauí (Atins to Parnaíba)

  • Day 3: Atins → Caburé → Paulino Neves → Parnaíba. A day of 4x4 adventure along the beaches and sand tracks of Paulino Neves. We cross the border into Piauí to explore the Parnaíba Delta—the only open-sea delta in the Americas.
  • Highlight: A sunset speedboat tour to witness the Revoada dos Guarás (hundreds of scarlet ibises returning to their nests).

Part 3: Ceará and Jericoacoara (Parnaíba to Jeri)

  • Day 4: Parnaíba → Camocim → Jericoacoara. Early departure along the coast. This section is spectacular: we cross by ferry in Camocim and drive directly on the beach, passing the "Island of Love" and the Tatajuba dunes until we reach Jericoacoara.
  • Day 5: Jericoacoara. A free day to enjoy the "Lagoa do Paraíso" and watch the sunset from the famous "Sunset Dune."

Part 4: The Connection to Europe (Jericoacoara to Fortaleza)

  • Day 6: Jericoacoara → Fortaleza (The Coastal Route). Instead of taking the asphalt road (approx. 4.5 hours), I recommend the Coastal Transfer. It consists of about 300 km of beach driving, passing through Icaraizinho de Amontada and Flecheiras. It is a long travel day but visually stunning.
  • Day 7: Fortaleza → Europe. From Fortaleza Airport (FOR), there are excellent direct connections back to Europe (e.g., TAP to Lisbon, Air France to Paris).

High-End Brazil Expedition: From the Heart of the Jungle to the Dream Coasts

I have designed a true gem of a trip for you—a three-week "tour de force" combining the very best of Brazil.

  • Week 1: The Magic of the Amazon. Deep immersion in the green heart of the country. The highlight is the Anavilhanas Archipelago (UNESCO World Heritage). As an experienced skipper, I know these waterways like the back of my hand and will guarantee insights that remain hidden from standard tourists.
  • Week 2: Desert, Water & Reggae. Fly to São Luís, the vibrant "Capital of Reggae," followed by the Lençóis Maranhenses—a surreal landscape of white dunes and crystal-blue lagoons.
  • Week 3: The "Route of Emotions" to Fortaleza. Private 4x4 journey to Jericoacoara, a legendary barefoot-luxury village, ending in Fortaleza for your direct flight home.

Why this tour? This 3-week combination offers everything: the deep silence of the Amazon, the cultural heritage of the Northeast, and the lifestyle of the world's most beautiful beaches. It is designed for those seeking the extraordinary with perfect logistics.

Don’t hesitate to get in touch – I will be delighted to design a tailor-made dream journey through the Amazon for you, whether for one week, two or tree. I will take care of every detail: from river transfers and accommodations to tickets for the Amazon Theatre, exciting excursions, and much more.

Together, we will determine the ideal time of year to visit the Amazon, and I will recommend unique festivals and cultural highlights that will turn your journey into an unforgettable experience.

Recommended Amazon Route Extension

This Amazon tour can easily be combined with other routes in Brazil.

One option is to take a flight from Belém to São Luís, followed by the spectacular journey through the Lençóis Maranhenses to Jericoacoara and on to Fortaleza. From Fortaleza, you can conveniently catch an international flight back to Europe.

Alternatively, you may fly from Belém to Salvador da Bahia and continue with a diverse Bahia tour.

Daniel Krattinger – Sailor, Adventurer, and Amazon Expert

The Amazon is more than just a destination for me—it is a passion. For eight months, I navigated the mightiest river on Earth aboard my own sailing vessel. I steered through treacherous currents, lost myself in hidden igarapés, and explored island worlds that appear in no atlas. At the mouth near Ilha de Marajó, I faced the legendary Pororoca—the primal force of a tidal bore that surges inland with uncontrollable power.

But my journey began long before I reached the coast: I conquered the Peruvian Andes by motorcycle to reach Yurimaguas, traveled by boat deeper into the jungle to Iquitos, and eventually reached Manaus via the tri-border region of Tabatinga/Leticia. From there, my path led me through the "Caribbean" paradise of Alter do Chão to the notorious Transamazônica—1,400 kilometers of mud, rain, and pure wilderness.

Today, through my marriage, I am deeply rooted in the Amazon region. With over 6,800 kilometers of travel experience—from the Andean headwaters to the Atlantic—I know the pulse of this river like few others. I have distilled these profound experiences into literature: My debut novel, "AMAZONAS: DER SCHWARZE PULS" (Amazon: The Black Pulse), is an atmospherically dense adventure thriller on the edge between truth and fiction. It is currently available in German as an e-book and paperback, with the English version coming soon.
